Catclaw Acacia (Senegalia greggii), also known as Gregg’s Acacia or Devil’s Claw, is a rare desert hardwood prized for its extreme density, rich color, and naturally striking figure. Native to the arid regions of Arizona, southern California, and northern Mexico, this hardy small tree produces wood with warm golden-brown to reddish-brown heartwood accented by subtle darker streaks, giving every blank a bold, natural character.
Despite its small diameter, Catclaw Acacia offers exceptional durability, stability, and a solid, premium feel in finished pieces. Its fine texture and natural luster allow it to turn, machine, and polish beautifully, making it ideal for pen blanks, knife handles, small turned objects, inlays, and other artisan woodworking projects. Each piece is unique, capturing the wild beauty of the southwestern desert in miniature form.
