Nicaragua Rosewood (Granadillo) – Exotic Hardwood Pen & Turning Blanks
Nicaragua Rosewood is a premium Central American hardwood prized for its rich rosewood-like appearance, exceptional density, and smooth finishing qualities. Also traded as Granadillo, Granadillo Negro, Palo Granadillo, and Coyote Wood, this material delivers the beauty and performance woodworkers expect from rosewoods—without the Dalbergia classification.
Botanical Information
Nicaragua Rosewood is most commonly sourced from the genus Platymiscium, primarily Platymiscium yucatanum and Platymiscium pinnatum. Though often marketed as a rosewood due to color and grain, it is not a true Dalbergia rosewood, making it a popular and responsible alternative for fine woodworking and turning.
Visually, Nicaragua Rosewood ranges from reddish-brown to deep chocolate tones, frequently accented with darker striping and a tight, uniform grain. When finished, it develops a natural gloss and depth comparable to traditional rosewoods.
This hardwood turns cleanly with sharp tools, holds crisp detail, and polishes to a glass-smooth surface, making it ideal for pen blanks, knife scales, bottle stoppers, musical instrument components, and precision turnings. Its natural oils contribute to durability, wear resistance, and a luxurious hand-feel.
Each blank is carefully selected for color consistency, grain quality, and structural soundness, ensuring dependable performance and striking finished results.
