Cholla cactus wood is prized for its intricate, open lattice-like structure. The dried woody skeleton naturally contains an interconnected network of pores and fibers, giving it an appearance unlike conventional hardwoods. Scientific research has confirmed the unique porous, mesh-like structure of Cholla wood and its distinctive mechanical characteristics.

When the natural Cholla skeleton is surrounded by colored epoxy, the resin flows through and around the open structure, creating dramatic contrast between the organic cactus framework and the brilliant mica color. Every blank is naturally different, making each finished pen a true original.

Wood & Material Characteristics

Cholla is not a conventional hardwood. The material comes from the dried woody skeleton of cactus species in the genus Cylindropuntia. Its distinctive lattice structure is lightweight and highly porous, providing an excellent framework for resin casting.

The open structure means every blank can reveal different patterns as it is turned. Depending on the particular piece, you may uncover additional voids, cells, natural variations and resin patterns during turning.

Important: Because Cholla is a naturally occurring material, no two blanks will be identical. Minor natural voids, variations in the cactus skeleton, resin patterns and color distribution are part of the character of these blanks and should be expected.

Turning & Finishing

Use standard pen-turning practices appropriate for hybrid and resin blanks. Sharp tools, controlled cuts and proper sanding techniques will help reveal the contrast between the Cholla skeleton and colored epoxy. A polished finish can bring out exceptional depth and shine in the resin while highlighting the intricate natural cactus structure.

For the best appearance, take your time when approaching the final dimensions—the unique internal structure of each Cholla blank is part of what makes the finished pen special.
